how the heck did I not figure out that you play as Alexis in the game. I played the game and I never figured that out until now. Maybe I rushed it a bit and didn't notice. Edit: it's weird because I was trying hard to figure out who Alexis was in the game.

What I enjoy the most about the story within Déraciné is the usage of that poetry. To clarify, though, Fiona Macleod was a pen-name, for writer William Sharp. It was one he wrote under beginning in the 1890s, and was largely secret. The part of his writings that I love the most is that he keeps faith with the true story behind the Fae themselves. His writings are best looked at as the stories of the Aos Sí - the Fair Folk. Other names are the daoine sídhe in Irish, and daoine sìth in Scottish mythology, though they were pronounced the same. Both refer to the people of the hollow hills or mounds. They were the top rung of Faerie society - noble, tall, beautiful, and equally terrible. They were not the cherubic creatures with pixie wings that we have come to know in the Western world. These creatures and all that shared their species were equal parts beautiful and grotesque. They were muses to those that worshipped them, and those same postulants would find themselves driven mad for it. The best representation of the darker appetites of the Sídhe are the sluagh sídhe, or “The Faerie Host”, which in Western culture is commonly called the Wild Hunt. Emily Dickinson wrote a verse about a “carriage that held Death and herself”, and such a black carriage became synonymous with death paying a house call. I am so happy to see a true and proper representation of this mythos and these creatures in a video game. For anyone interested in further uses within media, you can find Laurell K. Hamilton’s ‘Merry Gentry’ book series, that is all about the Sídhe and their many forms, and the Canadian TV series ‘Lost Girl’, which also explores the MANY mythological creatures, from the Scottish and Irish cultures, as well as Asian, Native American, and more.

If you want a use for your psvr, buy and play through Moss (if you don't have it via another vr set that is), it's (in my humble opinion) an amazing vr game with very interesting lore (and hints towards more games in the series). That was the game that made getting the psvr totally worth it for me. I wanted a cheap vr headset so I could experience what it was like (and the other options were pretty far beyond my price range), but getting Moss made it all worth it. Déraciné was an amazing bonus that made me jump and cry for joy and probably the strongest narrative I've played through so far, seeing as how easy it is to immerse oneself in the story in vr. Also, I cannot wait for Star Child to come out, looks like fun as well (albeit a huge disappointment, most like, after experiencing Moss and Déraciné xD). I also had another thought (which is roughly referenced in the latest video, lel) that maybe Déraciné takes place in the same universe as Bloodborne... it would be an interesting thought to explore!

I think Abigail was another of the five (there were two women in the picture) Rohnian scholars, a fairy not unlike ourselves and not neccesarily evil, but chooses to act as our guide and mentor as a fairy. I think she also intentionally hides the fact that we killed Yulia from us at the start. Or even worse, the reason why WE became a faerie is that Abigail as a faerie came to baby us and stole our time. Perhaps the events of the game and seeing the evil faerie's actions convince her to leave us be. I think as a Faerie, you're bound to your own past- you can never go anywhere you never went before- or are consumed with going back in time to prevent something from happening. Likely, the evil Faerie saw how the events of the Rohnian failure happened, or perhaps joined the Rohnians to prevent a tragedy in their own past. Upon becoming a faerie he became determined to steal as much time as possible to return to the past to undo something, something that apparently he doesn't succeed in until the bad end timeline where he consumes everyone but Nils, and likely even then simply does not succeed due to still not having enough or being unable to change anything- thus remaining an 'evil' faerie. Kinda like Nox from Wakfu, no amount of time will let us change the fate that defines us (time paradox!). This is likely the nature of ALL faeries, the player themselves, due to being a faerie, is stuck in a time loop of stealing life to return to the past until we choose not to take Yulia's time- only by accepting our deaths, and letting go of time are we free from the loop. Margareta too, likely became a faerie and got in a time loop to prevent her daughter's death- and perhaps was the 'evil being' that hurt Rosza, taking only a little bit of her time (because she loved Rosza) but found that she couldn't travel back in time to undo Alexis's fate. Perhaps even Rosza's endless bad dreams are her memories of her other timelines where her time was taken by Margarete and used to travel back in time, only for Margareta to fail and have to take Rosza's time again, and again. I think Margarette can't change the past because, with only 6 souls and the headmaster, she can't move far enough back. Or simply the rule is you can't go back in time before your own death. The same for the evil faerie, who waits around the cabin in the forest so he can take their time, but waits so long that all the time that he gathers is not actually enough to return anywhere in the past meaningful, leaving him trapped in the forest in an endless loop of feeding on the children. I actually think that's a good link to Dark Souls, when you think about it. An undead spirit feeding on the life of others, traveling back in time, and doing it over and over again, usually feeding on the same victims and their predictable habits? Just like a chosen undead using the bonfire, resetting the enemies, and then farming souls? Or a chosen undead riding the loop of existence between three games, New games Plus, etc. A loop that only ends when the player chooses to let it end and stop playing. It's narratively very souls like. Yulia as a faerie likely already made several time loops before we find her, only to find that she cannot prevent other tragedies or even her becoming a faerie, and is as trapped on the ground as we are. Or worse, the Yulia we interact with through the game is actually this 'evil Yulia" who has traveled back and forth, not being a true faerie but a human given more time. She finds that she cannot travel back before the time of her death, and that in any timeline where she's still dead, her friends all die (hence why she asks you to save them. Her loops are enclosed within Alexis's and she cannot exist before or after it. Us reviving her does not stop the loop, because she will die soon from living on only a small amount of borrowed time. So only by us closing the loop by never taking her life in the first place, does she escape hers. The zombie Margareta we meet is there because she was there to help us escape our own loop, by giving us a bit of both Margareta's time and Rosza's time, so that we can fix things in her stead. Our mother saves us from becoming an evil faerie, and lets us prevent our adopted siblings from becoming stuck in time and able to move forward with their lives. It also lets us drift into the cold snow of time to join our mother. I think one of the best themes of the Souls series is that death is not something to fear- there are fates worse than it Us reviving her does not stop the loop, because she will die soon from living on only a small amount of borrowed time.

The reason they are called the Fair Folk, Kindly Ones or The Gentry is because they are so capricious that calling them anything less would invite tragedy on anyone who had slighted them. They were also an indirect way to criticize the many times absurd disposition of the nobility and how they could cause suffering to common folk.

I'm really happy to see From Software is willing to break from the format of their traditional games, as they're truly a creative bunch, who could develop some profoundly unique games, going even beyond the Souls games. In the true ending for Bloodborne you (the PC) "guide humanity to its next evolitionary step". What if that step is faeires? I dont mean this as "DERACINE IS BLOODBORNE 2", but based on the time these kids live in judging by their clothes, they could be living in the same universe. There are also many bloodborne references, for example one kid has a book called something like blood and bones, which is a tale of the hunters.

So this could just be because we are the player, but in a way they were right. By making a Baby a fairy they also made the kindest and most gentle fairy, a baby having no past to hold on to has no reason to become selfish and malicious.
2 år sidenTheRezro
@ImpendingGhost Basically.
2 år sidenImpendingGhost
@TheRezro Well its only going off the fact that the player is the baby that died to became a fairy. Since this is the only one we know of, it's really up in the air as to how you see it.
2 år sidenTheRezro
@ImpendingGhostStill it was created form human. I don't think that it was really case here

2 år sidenUnseelie FaeLass
It seems to me....that Deracíne Fae are much like the Unseelie Fae. Unseelie Fae being dark faeries naturally. The Unseelie are not fond of humans in any capacity, and you don't have to offend them to get them to kill you. They'd gladly kill you for any reason. To Fae, death has no real meaning, as they are immortal and undying. Sure they have things they fear, but it won't kill them. Nothing can truly kill a Fae, that is expect a broken heart. Losing anyone or anything they love dearly enough could likely burn a Faerie's heart vastly with grief until they eventually pass away themselves due to that grief. Another thing worth noting, is that the Unseelie live in a world of endless cycles between Autumn and Winter, whereas their Seelie counterparts live within cycles of Spring and Summer. Course these Fae are curious as well as dark in nature. Which is line with Faeries that aren't sided with the Unseelie(dark) or Seelie(light) side of the Fae. These lone Fae, even the good ones, are feared heavily for their power. I can't be certain of what exact Faerie the ones in Deracíne are though. You have creatures like the Pooka and Dullahan that are greatly feared, but at the same time they don't attack humans in the same way that these Fae do. To find out what sort of Fae these characters are, we'd have to dig deep in celtic Fae lore indeed. They do have a light aura around them, but that could just be something all Fae may have in this world. I mean even light Fae were highly respected and even feared to an extent. Enough for people to avoid Fae kind in general and come up with ways to protect themselves. Ultimately this is one fascinating little game and one hard cookie to crack for extra bits of lore we could dig up. But hopefully my own little take helps Vaatividya.
2 år sidenSana Naryon
Ok, I had this idea for a game really souls like in its story, and I wanted to hear some second opinions on it, throw in your lot. The central mechanic is the collection of souls. As the player, you learn to collect souls and utilize them however you wish. Heal, hurt, travel, strengthen, even resurrect. The soul increases in value based on how valuable it is to the one who uses it. If you took the soul of some jerk you hate, it won't be worth more than a few points of healing or damage. If you take the soul of someone you have spent a lot of time with and had positive social interactions with, it increases in value, and the most valuable soul is your own, which can only be used once, and the game ends when you do. Of course, getting a soul means taking it from a person. No mooks here, only people you actually interact with. Thus, you have to interact with people to take their souls (you can take them without interaction, but they'll be completely worthless), which, of course, makes you more hesitant to kill them. I especially imagined one part at the end where the peaceful and friendly village is devastated, and the populace killed. You can either leave, never to return, or you can use your own soul, and bring them all back, but thereby ending the game. I also considered the idea of the main character sort of being tricked into stealing souls. You'd be fully aware of what you were doing, but you wouldn't know it was bad in-game, the same way slaughtering monsters in Undertale is supposed to make you feel bad. Depending on how much video game logic you're going by, you may not realize stealing souls is bad until these valkyrie-like beings start hunting you, which you'd originally think were trying to steal your souls for themselves, until you figure out they're trying to punish you for your heinous crime

fairies being childish is mostly disneys and such fault...original stories about fay creatures were often very dark, but most often mischievious and with some moral...also warning, as one of the key features of fay is they have very different set of morals and customs, often one can insult them without realizing, and most fay are basically amoral
2 år sidenTheRezro
@Sepulchure Valen Not the point. Even despite being cheesy and lazy they usually provide at least average entertainment. Most people who hate Disney do that for childish reason, using it as symbol of Childishness and childishly presuming that hating it would prove they fragile masculinity. In the end most companies are usually objectively worst and lazier then Disney who at least acknowledge value of franchise.
2 år sidenSepulchure Valen
@TheRezro Disney is actually pretty cheesy and lazy, that happens to every huge corporations. Why be innovative and take when you can keep it safe and simple and just make a lot of money? That's the goal of a business in the end, and the bigger and older it gets the more corporatism is in it. Disney is as bad as the other companies. Just because there is an alt-right hate movement against them doesn't make them any less bad. Would fallout 76 be less bad if they had an alt-right hate movement?
2 år sidenTheRezro
@bigles025 Seriously, what us your point? Disney with few exceptions is far from cheesy and lazy. I know that there is alt-right hate movement against them now, so I really hope that this debate end now.
2 år sidenbigles025
@TheRezro ok ok, disney only with their later work, 90s and later...but the general aproach to fairytales was to make them less violent
2 år sidenTheRezro
@bigles025 As much as that MCU is for babies (with stuff like Punisher and Black Panther definitively 0_0). It has no sense, as it is literal stereotype. Disney animation was in fact famous from more serious approach to family entertainment then most of competition at the time. And as I said they have maybe only few faeries in they history. Most of cheesy stuff come from other companies.
