Apologies for the awful audio quality. The recent Windows update decided to mess around with my (and your) sound settings for no reason.
Special thanks to Lokey for the following contributions to this script:
-Reminded me of the war use of Carthus Beacon
-Clarified what a "wish" to become "Last of the Dead" means in relation to the JP text
-Clarified that Wolnir "clung" to the power of the gods. He did not Plead, as the English text suggests.
-Suggested that the Clerics were of the Way of White

Have you seen those warriors from Carthus? They got Curved Swords. Curved. Swords.

I would love to see a desert environment in Dark Souls, sure you could say that we got that with the Ringed City dlc, but that wasn’t a proper desert in my mind, I don’t know but there’s something about the ruins and reminders of the glories of empires as old as time, hidden and jutting out from the dunes like lighthouses in the sea, that’s so powerful to me and very Dark Souls in my opinion from what I’ve seen.

So over time, the lands are being pushed closer together and are shoved on top of each other resulting in the dreg heap at the end of the age.

1:55 You know those warriors from Carthus? They have curved. peanuses. BIG curved paenuses.
Måned sidenMohd. Hammad
Carthus reminds of the Mamluks, a powerful desert empire of Levant, Arabia and Egypt. A commonality is when Mamluks didn't adopt gun powder weapons as they thought using such deadly weapon s would be dishonorable just as Carthus didn't adopt magic to fight their enemies. Eventually they were defeated by the Ottoman empire which relied heavily on gun powder by that time.

Carthus would have made a great expansion setting. All these curved weapons and middle eastern armors but not one desert in all of Dark Souls.
6 måneder sidend
I have to say the Carthus Catacombs were extremely disappointing. The whole area consisted of what, a couple of big open rooms and a bunch of hallways and staircases? It’s only due to the close proximity of Smouldering Lake/Izalith/Demon Ruins that it retains any semblance of intrigue at all. If those areas weren’t there it would amount to the second most inconsequential and disappointing area in the game, after the Profaned “Capital” (which should really be called the Profaned Edifice, since the ostensible “city” appears to consist of only a single solitary building).

Yeah, in DS2 crowns had big importance, but they didn't become one. You literally had all the crowns you collected and could use any of them. Once you become the rightful monarch, all crowns have the effect of marking you as one - the King doors open for you and you don't hollow. It's actually more similar to what you do with the Lords of Cinders - you collect the blessings of the past kings to mark you as the next true monarch. You collect crowns of the dead kings as the symbol of their rule and you get an actual blessing from the one king you can talk to - Vendrick, even if its in a memory.

If true it makes you wonder just how terrifying the abyss watchers were at the height of their power. Here you have Wolnir and his warriors conquering kingdom after kingdom, pulling kings off their thrones and literally collecting their crowns. For all intents and purposes Carthus was THE power to beat in their day, no one could stop them. Then Wolnir starts dabbling with the abyss and it spreads throughout his kingdom attracting the attention of the Abyss Watchers who procede to just burn the whole empire to the ground, and carthus would have been a right and proper empire, it was no fleeting kingdom like the ones Wolnir crushed. That's terrifying. What little we know paints the Watchers as a force that everyone was scared of, and it's not just the Watchers themselves, we know they had followers (who turned into/became the gru) and auxiliaries (the farron followers in Ariandel). They must have been by a wide margin the dominant force of their age to be able to burn kingdoms and empires at a whim. Thank the fading flame that we only had to face a corrupted remnant of them or we would never have succeeded.

The kingdom of Carthus almost reminded me, by name alone, of the kingdom of Carthage: an ancient society native the the Tunisian area. They were truly war-like, with their most notable alumnus being the general Hannibal Barca. I wonder if there's a connection between the two.

The abyss watchers actually didn't actually know that Wolnir was meddling with the abyss. They'd just heard the legends that they drank estus when they were about to lose duels, a completely unforgivable behaviour.

What if Wolnir is the bearer of the curse? Emboldened by the seeming immunity to the curse granted by the crowns pillaged and Vendrick's words he reaches out to the dark. In his search for true release from the shackles of fate he uncovered the abyss and a means to stave it off, not unlike his own curse. Until some jackoff with a reinforced darksword sent him on his way there anyway. As for his size, he could just be huge for the same reason that Vendrick is huge. Or maybe this is just a half baked theory that I haven't bothered to think about properly.
