I think that after the age of fire comes the age dark and than the age of dragons. I think Gwen stalled and eventually sorta broke the cycle dooming the world.

To the western audience maybe jorgmander is THE world serpent, but in the east, it's not the case. The Eastern world serpent is adi shesha, or ananta shesha(infinite snake), an important figure in both Hinduism an Buddhism. In Hinduism He represents time, and encircles the world and is responsible for the the start of the next cycle. Way more fitting then jorg. And this wouldn't be the first Hinduism inspired lore, manus is derived from mānu(the proganitor of mankind in Hinduism). The Ralf Griffith translation of veda added the s to manu, hence making his name 'manus'. Also adi shesha has multiple heads, that makes you think weather framt and kaath are different beings or not, maybe they are one entity with a very different goal from what we understand

World serpent probably leans more towards the ouroboros, rather than the nordic serpent specifically. In every culture there was a serpent the held the world within its coils. One of the oldes artefacts ever discovered was a mesopotamian bowl that had a serpent biting its tail while within was the wprld.

Do you think mannus has some symbolism with Gwyn being Thor and Kaathe being the world serpent. If I remember right Mannus is the name of a Germanic god that was created from Tuisto who attributed him, I’m guessing that’s basically another term for creating. Anyway Mannus is said to have birthed many “children” those children being gods and the names of tribes of Germanic people. My theory is that ds Mannus is somehow suppose to symbolise the folktale Mannus in terms of authority. As cool as Dark Souls and all of its characters are, the World Serpents look ridiculously stupid and out of place.

Primordial means the beginning of time. Time begun when the first flame began - which corrupted dragons, which made serpents. So, no, "Primordial Serpent" is still correct.

frankly after rereading the whole comment thread you're all being dumb, who cared about day and night? before light it was dark. the light in ds is conceptual and it doesn't like engulf the world. whether there is a day and night cycle tbh is a matter of environment/atmosphere. that's why anor londo goes dark after you kill gwynevere. but I still think the absence of time before the first game is interesting. btw. good example of day/night being irrelevant. fog which the world was shrouded in before flame, cannot form unless moister cool air forms with hotter dry air above. how does the air get heated? the sun. it's not a point against op argument the whole argument is just invalid

I believe that there is a third aspect, and with it a misconception. Throughout the first and the second game there was always talking about the age of light and the age of dark but with the third game and what can be considered the “true ending” I think it essentially shows that there was a fallacy maybe just another lie of lord Gwen. Essentially all of the times in the three games in which people talk about an age of dark it’s actually an age of abyss. Oh that black muck all those creatures Gwen basically fixed it so that everyone believed that was the age of dark that we would all be fighting against and we should never let come to pass. But that is not an age of dark it’s more of the age of the abyss or the age of shadow. Because it is a darkness created through the disparity of the first flame. That’s why in the third game the true ending is through the fire keeper extinguishing the first flame. At least that’s my head canon about the whole thing.

@bebeidon yeah because technically the flame still exists within your character. The same as in the other games if you don’t link the flame most likely someone else will come around and kill you to become strong enough to link the flame and then they do it. Or you become the Lord of dark only to be taken out by someone who then goes and likes the flame. They’re still fighting over the scraps of Lord Gwyn’s miracle. That’s why I always figured that the fire keeper ending was the best true ending because it just extinguish is the first flame and allows the age of fire or age of shadow tug-of-war/cycle to finally end.

@Nazo- kage but the flame stops to exist and the cycle ends with that ending, you are stuck in the cycle with the other endings??!

@bebeidon Lord Gwen is as much an asshole as he is a tragedy. He fought long and hard against the dragons to usher in the age of fire. But never succeeded in completely eliminating the dragons. Because they did something that Lord Gwen could not allow himself to do: they adapted. Sure there were a few dragons that were holdovers but one was a product of the past still going on one was an actual creation of man and the third was raised by Lord Gwen to be a guard dog. Above all else we know that the first flame was going to go out. The very thing that started “Disparity“ Truthfully the reason that I always figured the Lord of dark ending was an evil ending was because you’re still stuck in Gwen’s cycle. So long as the first flame exists people will be fighting over it. Either to take the flame for themselves or to link it, causing the age of fire to extend even longer.

@Nazo- kage it's funny how we share so much of the same thoughts but interpret it differently. for me it feels more like a good ending because the world comes back to that grey order before gwyn corrupted it by starting the light/dark cycle. breaking through the cycle feels more right to me than continue what gwyn started because how could that state be the "supposed to be". from gwyns pov it makes sense of course he wants to protect his kingdom by linking the flame but he corrupted the worlds order by doing it, so was it wrong? i think so but what do you think

@bebeidon well I always figured those were more evil endings, because that’s not how things are “supposed to be”. Remember it’s stated in the first game that lord Gwen ignored The order of the world. It was supposed to be the age of gray, the age of fire, then the age of dark, and so on. Basically even if all the age of dark is, is resting period, The cycle the world is supposed to be going through would be restored. That’s why I meant even if a new first flame shows up the world will at least be able to heal first. Then if it turns out that people somehow remember the last first flame could be connected you could have people either wanting to do it wanting to stop it or wanting to consumer same as the other games but it wouldn’t be as much of a foregone conclusion which ending it’s going to be.

After Age of Ash, it all resets in the Age of Dragons, then King's Field, the origin of Moonlight comes about again. :)

Its a bit of shame that most voice acting in the Dark souls games sound so.. Unimpressive. I'm sure you dont notice if after a while when you play the games, but as an outsider, the voice acting just seems very much like they just pulled someone in from the streets saying "Hey, sound old and wise".
