I've done a run of Dark Souls where every single enemy was replaced with a boss, as well as the infamous 'Scortched Contract' mod... and NEITHER were as frustrating as Getting Over It. Getting Over It is the first game I've ever actually thrown in the towel on (at least in terms of the base game). Don't get me wrong when I say all this, because I actually do like Getting Over it, but I've never had the temperament to complete it. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's a different sort of challenge to others on this list. In terms of the individual challenges it presents, they aren't actually 'that' difficult; there's no obstacle in Getting Over It (at least, as far I've managed to get) that takes as many attempts to pass as, for example, Cuphead bosses on expert mode... but because failing any one challenge can result in losing large amounts of progress, the question becomes not whether you can complete a given section, but whether you can completed all the individual challenges in a row without failing. It's kind of like a boss rush of physics based platforming, perhaps most analogous to Hollow Knight's 'God Master' DLC (another things I've still not managed to complete), the actual difficulty of (most) bosses is the same as in the base game... but trying to complete them all in a row becomes an entirely different story.

I just started Hollow Knight this week and it absolutely blew me away. And I already fell in love with Cuphead last year. I think it's probably the best thing I've ever played (not a hyperbole) because of how the whole thing comes full circle, because of how much quality and effort is shown in every second of it. It's more consistent than Ocarina of Time, Dark Souls, The Witcher 3 and some of my other favorite games; they all have pitfalls. Can't wait for the DLC.

I personally don't see how the whole Soulsborne thing is unique and iconic enough to be considered its own genre, like how Rogue-like and Metroidvania became genres. I mean, what innovative concepts did it introduce to gaming? Also, the games were never difficult, they're just a psychological mindfuck, designed to make you instinctively do the opposite of what you should be doing.

Perhaps if you are afraid of using this channel to post things that are not related to From Software, maybe make a different channel? I for one would love to see your story videos and theory videos on other games. I can't be alone in that opinion. I would have never even thought to spend my time with Gwent. I now think otherwise.

I recently picked up Shadowverse. I liked it because it was essentially Hearthstone without any RNG, but you are allowed to have three of the same legendary in each deck. That makes Shadowverse essentially three times more expensive than Hearthstone and EXTREMELY hard for new players to get into. Fortunately, you can expect a legendary every 5-8 packs, but it’s still really considering there are 6 expansions at all times to get into.

I would suggest taking another look at For Honor after their most recent patch. I was in the same boat and hated this game post release, and much like patch 1.5 in division, the most recent expansion may have started its revival.

I think the focus on difficulty comes from the fact that souls doesn't have a difficulty slider and a lot of people are used to playing on medium. honestly there are games that on their maximum difficulty setting are far harder than dark souls and are made even more punishing by the fact that you don't keep anything when you die. Take Doom (2016, but even the original fits the bill) where you die in 2 hits from most enemies and if you are understocked in certain areas you may have to restart the level to even have a chance... dark souls was challenging in a world that wasn't used to being challenged anymore.

Looking at that straw poll Vaati's fanbase has really good taste. Divinity Original Sin 2 being on 6th place instead of 26th was pleasantly surprising. Was also surprised that Nier had the first place (I Voted for it too). Hell, everything in the Top 6 is top tier and the top 10 in general is pretty good.

Everything you say about Hearthstone is true, and your points of views are well defined. But you have to admit that even with a limited collection, if you are clever you can make the game fun as hell.

This is how I define a souls like day -Great story -Great Atmosphere -Interesting Combat -Massive, fun boss battles For me this defines a souls game

i kind of wish i had seen this video so i could put my own two cents into the hearthstone debate. Its important to note that Hearthstone is, above all else, a shallow and lame version of the original WoW TCG. Many of the concepts from the WoW TCG were used in Hearthstone, but they chose not to keep pretty much any of the unique and interesting concepts (your hero has incredibly unique powers, quests provide energy instead of turn based energy). Why is this significant? Because they went and ended the WoW TCG JUST prior to the release of Hearthstone...

The sad thing about HS is that it could be a great game, but money won't allow it. I think that also applies to every blizzard title, imagine if SC2 was free to play from the start? Imagine a better D3 , fucking binding of isaac is a better dungeon crawler than D3. I'm not an economist but I know I'm never giving money to Blizzard again after experiencing HS. There is a lot to talk about EA I mean Blizzard practices and how in the end it just kills all the possible timeless value of sth beautiful like a good game, the next title will be probably warcraft 4, and probably just like SC2 and D3 and HS to WoW it will fail to live up to it's origin. I had hope years ago when Blizzard hired a dev team, I dared to think it was a fighting game, imagine a company like Blizzard putting it's money into that genre, it sounds crazy, but exciting as fuck, but in the end it was D3 I think.

Perfectly summed up my feelings on For Honor. I probably put more time into it than any other game and thought it was amazing at first. Over time it’s issues became more and more abundant and I just stopped playing and it’s a real shame. PS: I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new GOW. The only worthy games being called "souls like" are games made by FromSoft. I've "tried" these souls like games but non manage to bring the same magic as FromSoft has.
